Calypso Nuts
Calypso Nuts - Noon

Audiences from Key West to Put-In Bay and throughout the Caribbean have been delighted by the duo with the island twist. "Sure it's steel drums," says Robbie Meade, "but we look at them a little differently. We take the drums where we want them to go instead of allowing the drums to force our musical hand."

Sponsored by Corona Extra, Corona Light, and Kokomo Island Traders, The CalypsoNuts are more than just a steel drum act. No shows identical are identical. The nightly menu consists of Pop and Rock, Reggae and Soca, Acoustic and Electric; all different, but all the perfect ingredients to a great bowl of musical gumbo.

At 11 years, The CalypsoNuts are the longest running act at "The Meeting of the Minds", the week-long National Parrot Head Convention. The CalypsoNuts CDs "Six More Weeks" and "No Lifeguard on Duty" and rare live shows receive regular air play on Radio Margaritaville and several other internet and satellite radio stations.

Taul Paul brings his mix of island music, blues, country, rock, and folk to The Quarterdeck at 1 p.m.

Kristie Bobal - 3 p.m.

Kristie Bobal
Kristie Bobal has been surrounded by Music all her life. From church choir to marching band, college bars to concert stage, this natural progression has led to Kristie's first solo CD.

Drawing from her love of Country music as well as an extensive Rock background, this CD travels from the rollicking Country of "If you Don't Know" to the all out Rock assault of "Green Light". With the help of several friends, many of whom are top session players in her home of Nashville, Tenn., "Blissful Magic Moment" is destined to find a frequent place on your playlist! Keep an ear out for appearances by Will Kimbrough, Andy Wood, Tall Paul, Tim Carter, Milan Miller & Brent Truitt all the while being mesmerized by Kristie's wonderful vocals.

Rum Barrel featured artist: Rock Solomon

Take one slightly insane cult-icon folk singer, mix in a zany old school saxophone player, simmer nine months, season to taste, let stand three more months, then come up with a cool name and you have Rock Solomon.

He performs Friday, August 24, from 8 p.m. on the Rum Barrel Quarterdeck

From a nomadic childhood traveling the Pacific Northwest living in old panel vans, trucks and buses with five siblings and a schizophrenic mother, Rock trained in piano, flute, drums and trumpet in his early teens, later becoming a well-known wild child.

He joined a high school metal band as a drummer, before dropping out of school, getting in trouble with the law and going on the run shortly after his 18th birthday. After a couple years of running from place to place and taking odd jobs, he abandoned everything and fled to Key West to start over. He arrived with no money, no friends, and slept on the beaches.

In a few short years, he enrolled in college and studied art, music, photography, acting and more. He won several art grants including the highly coveted SFCC grant for media. He landed leading roles in The Glass Menagerie, Sordid Lives & Incorruptible that won him great accolades and sold out performances. He won a music contest on MTV and modeled in ads in the New York Times. He wrote a play and a movie, built a recording studio, recorded three albums, made several short films and a feature, discovered romance and new friends, and changed the entire course of his life through sheer passion and determination.

Rock Solomon now lives part time in Key West and part time in Los Angeles where he works exclusively in music, film and acting.

Featured Artist: Anthony Picone

LoFi's with Anthony Picone
Anthony Picone is the lead vocals and guitar bass for the LoFi's, a 3-piece rock band that performs throughout Key West and the Keys. With Tony "Baltimore" Durante on lead vocals and guitar and Dave Baron on drums/percussion, they've built quite a following after just a short time playing together.

Originally from New York, Picone is a singer/songwriter and also performs as a solo artist in Key West where he recently relocated. He writes and records his own songs and will occasionally perform his material with the LoFi's.

The band keeps things loose and spontaneous on stage, welcoming requests from the audience. Their song list includes music by Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Beatles, Foo Fighters, The Cure, and Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as 70's funk, 80's pop and 90's rock.

Most of the LoFi's shows are acoustic with Picone splitting lead vocals and guitar solos with Durante. When it's time to "amp it up", Baron plays his full drum kit, Picone switches to bass and Durante plays the electric guitar.

Anthony Picone plays live on the Quarterdeck this month at 7:30 p.m. on June 19 and with the LoFi's on June 22 and 30. Check our music calendar for times.

Rum Barrel Featured Artist: Larry Baeder

Photo from GIBlythe
Guitarist/producer/songwriter Larry Baeder is a seasoned contemporary guitarist with such an impressive musical past that it's difficult to do justice with words to his multi-faceted talents and accomplishments.

A quick glance his most recent endeavors reflect startling diversity: his performance at the Apollo in NYC with Chuck Jackson, Ashford & Simpson and Smokey Robinson; his guitar work on GI Blythe's recent compelling self-titled EP release, GI Blythe; his production of Jambalaya Brass Band's well received CD It's a Jungle Out There. Larry Baeder & The MuseGurus released their self-titled highly anticipated collaborative debut CD in the fall of 2011.

The wildly popular Key West-based band, Larry Baeder & The MuseGurus is Americana Music at its finest, influenced by old school R&B, Soul Music, and Bluegrass. The heart of the band is the writing team of the three principals: the crystal clear voice of Dora Gholson, backed by legendary guitarist/producer Larry Baeder and famous French Rocker/Bassist Francois Gehin.

Berklee grad Larry Baeder is a gifted and virtuosic guitarist of significant depth, and one whose dizzying, dynamic musical career reads like a Who's Who of authentic American music of the past 30 years. He has played guitar with jazz legends Jay McShann, Illinois Jacquet, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, and singer Diane "Mama" Rae. He has performed and recorded with jazz greats Jeremy Stieg and Eddie Gomez.

Baeder has collaborated with Evidence recording artist Nora York and legendary Canadian songwriter Jane Sibery. He also spent five years touring and recording with Capricorn recording artist James Montgomery. During that time, Larry played with legendary blues artists Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Bonnie Raitt, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Albert King, and Dan "Elwood Blues" Akroyd, while also producing tracks for several Boston artists.

In the recording studio, the late Jimmy Miller, producer for The Rolling Stones, Steve Winwood, Traffic and Blind Faith, included Baeder on much of his later work. By the mid-eighties, Larry was recording sessions with Buddy Guy, James Taylor, and Carly Simon, as well as playing on jingles and film scores.

Baeder has performed in Europe, the Middle East, South America, and Africa. In addition, he has strong ties to New Orleans and has frequently worked with piano genius Henry Butler as well as other NOLA musicians including Ivan Neville, Brian Stoltz, Rebbecca Berry and Shannon Powell.

He has worked with Blues legend Tracy Nelson and is a featured soloist on Heracio "El Negro" Hernandez and Robbie Ameen's criticlly acclaimed CD Robbie and Negro from the Third World War.  Baeder's 2000 solo-artist CD release Maximo Strut reached #5 on the Blues charts nationwide.

The Open Mic Jam with Larry Baeder on The Rum Barrel Quarterdeck kicks off tonight at 7:30 p.m. For more on Baeder and the MuseGurus, check out their profile on GigaMusic.

Featured Artist: Potcheen

Colorado-based Celtic Pirate-Folk Rock Band Potcheen has a spirited mix of high-energy Celtic Traditional, Bluegrass, Zydeco, Punk Jam, Blues and Rock, all rolled into a pirate sensibility.

Their songs are smashing ballads of Irish rebellion, love, immigration and drink. In other words, not your grandpa's folk Band. But what's up with the band's name, you say?

Poitín, anglicised as Poteen or Potcheen, is a traditional Irish distilled, highly alcoholic beverage (60%-95% ABV). Poitín was traditionally distilled in a small pot still and the term is a diminutive of the Irish word pota, meaning "pot".

Traditionally distilled from malted barley grain or potatoes, it is one of the strongest alcoholic beverages in the world (renowned for its ability to get the drinker intoxicated the morning after drinking it by drinking water and thereby bringing the remaining ethanol back into solution), and for centuries was classified as illegal in Ireland.

Potcheen the band has played thousands of shows from New York to San Francisco, over 250 festival appearances and opened for some of the best performers in the world. Surrounded by Celtic Tapestries, pirate flags and endless pints of beer, they make any room into a little slice of Ireland, combining traditional Irish Themes (drink, love & politics) with punk attitude and rapid-fire delivery that's sure to make your toes tap and your throat gasp for a Guinness.

Potcheen appears at The Rum Barrel on October 26 just in time for our Drinking Made Easy Viewing Party.
